An Inspiring Start to the New School Year: A Special Math Class at Wahaha Bilingual School As the golden autumn arrives and the new school year begins, students at Hangzhou Wahaha Bilingual School were treated to an exciting "First Lesson of the New Semester" delivered by an esteemed guest: Professor Li Jianshu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Zhejiang University Institute for Advanced Mathematical Studies, who gave a special lecture on mathematics. Students listened attentively, actively asking questions, and experienced the fascinating beauty of mathematics.

In their young hearts, a seed of mathematical exploration was planted.

With just one lesson, Professor Li opened the door for countless students who have a passion for math.

"The Soul of Mathematics: Truth and Beauty"

In the opening lecture, Professor Li started by discussing polyhedra, showcasing the truth and beauty of mathematics.

From introducing the concept of polyhedra to explaining the famous Euler’s formula for polyhedra, and even presenting the Königsberg Bridge problem, Professor Li used vivid examples to illustrate the elegance, simplicity, and wonder of the mathematical world, and demonstrated how mathematical knowledge can be applied to solve real-world problems.

He also shared stories of how mathematicians throughout history have sought breakthroughs in the face of challenges, and discussed the profound impact of mathematical theories on modern science and technology. His captivating lecture left a deep impression on all the students in attendance. The entire class was both enlightening and interactive. Professor Li not only left students with a wealth of amazing mathematical knowledge but also sparked a strong curiosity in them to further explore the world of mathematics. After the lecture, students and teachers eagerly asked questions, seizing every opportunity to engage directly with the esteemed professor.

"Can Artificial Intelligence Replace Mathematicians in the Age of AI?"

"Do we still need to develop computational skills in our regular teaching?"

In response to these questions from students and teachers, Professor Li emphasized that math education should focus more on cultivating mathematical thinking skills, helping students develop the habit of rational thought, and encouraging them to aim for the goal of becoming a "mathematician."

Sharing the Beauty of Math and Igniting a Passion for Learning

In addition to the public lecture, Professor Li also had a face-to-face meeting with a group of middle and high school students from Wahaha Bilingual School who have a strong interest in mathematics.

This "gathering of math enthusiasts" was equally exciting. High school representatives confidently raised questions they encountered during their journey of learning mathematics. For example, students noticed that English is often more concise and clear than Chinese in math lessons and asked whether learning math in English provides an advantage.

Drawing from his own overseas study experience, Professor Li encouraged students to study mathematics bilingually. He explained that language is a vehicle for knowledge and culture, and learning different languages and cultures can help broaden horizons, enhance inclusiveness, and increase competitiveness. He was also pleased to see that the bilingual learning environment at Wahaha Bilingual School nurtures and stimulates students' thirst for knowledge and their learning potential.

The founder of the high school math club shared his experience of showcasing the charm of mathematics through club activities, which ignited other students' passion for learning math.

This received praise from Professor Li and the teachers present. Professor Li also shared his philosophy on student development: "The primary goal of education is to cultivate a person's character and moral integrity. Second, it is to develop their rational and thinking abilities, and finally, to equip them with excellent mathematical skills."

He encouraged the students to become people of character and reason, and to steadfastly pursue their dreams.

Through this inspiring discussion and Q&A session, the students gained a sense of Professor Li's wisdom, humility, and his broad-mindedness, which encompasses a concern for the world and a global perspective. At the same time, the enthusiasm, openness, confidence, and focus displayed by the Wahaha students left a deep impression on Professor Li.

A New Semester, A Fresh Start:

Striving Towards Greater Goals

During the break, outstanding middle and high school representatives accompanied Professor Li on a tour of the Wahaha Bilingual School campus.

Though the time spent face-to-face with Professor Li was brief, it is hoped that this encounter will serve as an inspiration for the students, providing them with role models of achievement and instilling a mindset that will benefit them for life.

As the new school year begins, we look forward to seeing every Wahaha student build a solid academic foundation, maintain their passion, and continue striving to become the best version of themselves. --- Let me know if you need further refinements!
