Why WBS

Education of the Whole Child:

WBS combines the essence of Chinese traditional culture with the best of international education, ensuring strong roots in China while developing insightful global perspective. The school emphasizes the cultivation of our students' abilities and fully implements the  advantages of experiential education in order to stimulate and guide our students' personal development and cultivate capabilities such as self-management and critical thinking.

Integration of China and the West:

Our students absorb the essence of both Chinese and Western culture through their exposure to the philosophy of both Chinese and Western education.  Our bilingual learning environment and the co-teaching format used by our Chinese and international teachers enable students to establish solid Chinese language skills as well as strong English abilities as they prepare for the future.

Differentiated Learning:

Children learn in different ways and absorb learning at different speeds. Our differentiated learning approach allows each student to achieve mastery before moving on to the next level of learning, a method not seen in traditional classrooms. Our small class of 26 students allows for targeted teaching, and co-teaching by Chinese and international teachers provides for reinforcement of learning. The high teacher-to-student ratio in each class provides opportunities for small group lessons based on differences in students' skills and personality, further differentiating and personalizing student learning.

Comprehensive Evaluations:

Student learning is assessed using a comprehensive evaluation system instead of a single score formula. We provide evaluations and reports completed by both Chinese and international teachers to reflect all aspects of learning and skills, and to provide a comprehensive picture of each student’s progress.  In this way, we provide a clear representation of the unique skills and nature of each child.

Integrated Curriculum:

At WBS, we integrate curricular subjects whenever possible to illustrate the relationship of subjects and skills in the real world. We constantly enhance our curriculum by following students’ curiosity and natural line of inquiry, and we focus on the cultivation of students' core accomplishments.

The Middle School Project-Based Learning program (PBL) helps students to acquire knowledge and skills through solving practical, real life problems. Through independent inquire, sharing discovery and cooperative work they unlock the science and essential learning underlying each problem, and develop comprehensive problem-solving skills. The projects enhance students’ critical thinking, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

House System:

At WBS, many student activities are organized through the House System.  House activities allow an additional means through which to develop the child, address specific needs, and provide a venue for self-discovery. The House system encourages interaction between students across classes and grade levels beginning in Grade One, promotes collaboration and sense of community, and allows students to participate in various intra-mural competitions, fostering team spirit and House pride.

After School Activities:

WBS provides a variety of after school activities focusing on the arts, science and technology, sports, culture and English language learning. More than 80 courses are tailored to student interests and skill levels, such as debate, drama, fencing, rowing, racing leagues, programming, Japanese, French, Yue Opera, and Model United Nations.
