Differentiated according to grade level, our Chinese calligraphy program includes hard pen calligraphy for Grades One and Two, and brush calligraphy for Grades Three and Four. It incorporates calligraphic techniques such as proper pen/brush grip, posture, stroke formation and stroke order, as well as an appreciation of the history and evolution of Chinese characters. Students learn the origins of Chinese characters, both pictograms and ideograms, develop an enjoyment of writing calligraphy, and further enhance their understanding of this important aspect of Chinese culture.
At WBS, Chinese as a First Language encompasses the full scope of the national Chinese curriculum. The program is designed to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, to enhance comprehensive language competence, and to strengthen the understanding of Chinese culture. Essential to development of social skills and growth in a changing world, this program empowers learners to construct and apply knowledge of the language, and to develop thinking skills, aesthetic appreciation, and creativity. Students grow in their respect for cultural heritage and learn to contribute to its preservation.
WBS bilingual math combines Chinese and international mathematical thinking, concepts, modes and strategies. English language Math is differentiated to ensure that instruction is consistent with students’ English level and general math skills, and cross-curricular learning allows students to apply math skills to real-life problems. Comprehensive course planning yields a program that addresses students’ language and cognitive levels and is structured in combination with other curriculum. While emphasizing strong fundamental math skills, WBS’s math program stresses project based learning, mathematical analysis and interpretation, problem solving skills, and innovation.
WBS English teaching develops students’ basic comprehensive language skills on a with a special focus on reading ability. It promotes students’ cultural understanding and thinking skills, develops their character, and presents them with an international perspective. The course is co-taught by international and Chinese teachers using domestic and international texts, and features cognitive reasoning, differentiated reading, themed activities, and English drama.
Physical education at WBS is a mandatory program promoting health, strength and athleticism. The course is co-taught by Chinese and international teachers, and combines the best of Chinese and western teaching styles. It features a wide range of western sports activities such as soccer, basketball, American football, and gymnastics as well as Chinese martial arts and other traditional sports. Students grow in physical ability, physical and emotional well-being and teamwork, and develop language competence, sportsmanship and cultural understanding.
Our Visual Arts program develops students’ sense of aesthetics while developing technical arts skills which, when combined, enable them to express themselves creatively in different art forms. Students are introduced to the artistic traditions of China and the world, historical and modern art, and are encouraged to find art forms in the world around them. Students explore the correlation between art and other curricular subjects, and through their investigations develop independent learning skills.
Our character development (CD) program is designed to build character and integrity in our students. Each year, a series of activities focusing on core values and ethics are held, and the CD curriculum is continually enhanced based on the natures and needs of the students.
At WBS, Creative Drama in Education (CDIE) includes interactive theater games and improvised performance. Addressing humanistic qualities as the fundamental concept, the program features theater games, body language and facial expression training, role playing, mime, and improvisational acting of stories. Students take initiative and build connections to the world, allow full play to their imaginations, and give free expression to their thoughts and feelings while learning to create.
